eReader | Love Rocks

On the 7th of October, 2015, Worldreader personnel, Joseph and Love Rocks member Ama Asantewa arrived at Dordiak Educational Complex in Adukrom, in the Eastern Region at 9:45am with kindles that were donated to the school through the kind support of Dutch Chapters, Worldreader and Love Rocks.
After an hour of settling down and meeting with the school authorities and teachers, training of the teachers commenced at 11am. 10 teachers were present at the training. Joseph meticulously took them through what the e-reader was, how to take good care of the e-reader, how to use it to its full capacity and how to teach their students all they had learned. The teachers were excited about the e-reader and its capability and were thrilled that they had the opportunity to not only experience its usage, but the endless possibilities they could teach the students with the device. The training lasted for 3 hours. After the training, the teachers were given an assignment each on the usage of the e-reader and encouraged to take the devices home to explore more.

On the second day, training resumed. Each teacher took the centre stage and explained /solved their assignment in front of the rest of the teachers. After an hour and a half of revision and peer to peer teaching amongst the teachers, 14 students, selected from lower primary, upper primary and junior high school joined the class for the training. The students were very excited and eager to learn.
Supervised by Joseph, the students were taken through what the e-reader was, how to take care of it and how to use it to its full capability by the teachers. A section of teachers took the centre stage to train and one-on-one training between teacher and student commenced. The second part of the training lasted for about an hour and a half and the students returned to their classrooms.
The training ended on a positive note with the project manager, Daniel Sakyi having a one-on-one intensive top up with Joseph to tighten all loose ends.

On the 9th of October, 2015, the school was decorated and a tent that hosted 100 chairs was built in the school compound. Music was played as the students waited patiently for invited guests and parents to stream in for the launch that was slated to happen at 10am.
The event, which was fully packed started at 10:15am with an opening prayer by the school’s PTA chairman. The MC of the day, head teacher – Seth Donkor started off with a welcome address, followed by 4 students who welcomed the guests with a short dance performance.
Members of Love Rocks – Daniel, Kofi and Ama were invited to talk about the project, and the involvement of Love Rocks and Worldreader. This was followed by the Project Manager, Daniel Sakyi who talked about the training they had undergone and the anticipation of the school to start using the e-readers.

Mrs. Mingle, District Education Officer and Mr. Akuorkor, former head of Presbyterian Boys Secondary School, Legon spearheaded the cutting of the ribbon to launch the 50 kindles received by the school. This was followed by students demonstrating the use of the kindle to the parents and guests.
Special guest to the event, Gyasihene of the town, who was one of the people the students demonstrated the use of the e-reader to, was highly impressed.

Certificates were awarded to the teachers who went through the training
Pledge forms were then passed around for parents and students to fill, promising to take care of the e-readers and use it well.
Refreshments were then passed around to each guest. Two students gave poetry recitals.
Mrs. Mingle and Mr. Akuorkor both took to the floor to talk about the importance of education and reading and expressed their delight in the school having this opportunity to better their worth.
The event ended with a closing prayer.

The training and the launch ceremony was very successful. The launch was attended by about 90 people. We left the town of Adukrom with very pleased students, teachers and parents and a community of people requesting that the project be spread to other schools in the community.
